Stadskanaal appears to
be a very modern city; many new houses and buildings.
Driving along the canal,
before you pass the yellow gate, turn right and you’ll find the Rail
museum S.T.A.R. Museumspoorlijn. A workshop of the steam-train and it has
a stop on the section Veendam – Stadskanaal – Musselkanaal. During the
months of June to November this train drives on specific days. The
workshop is open more often.
Further on along the canal, just past the bend, which was
constructed by King William the Third, you see a striking water-tower.
And beside that the district museum Streek-museum is located. A small
museum; a black-and-white movie is shown about life during the peat era.
The gallery Boven-Galerie, which means upstairs gallery, is
unfortunately only to be reached by stairs.
And the Museum Musica (music museum, along the canal) is only
opened on Saturday and Sunday, except in July and August.

It is worth the trouble to make a trip to Onstwedde, which is
approximately 10 km via a picturesque route. At the Brink follow the
direction of the sign ZWEMBAD and then at the first corner on your left
is the museum Radio- & Speelgoedmuseum. Very small, but with an
interesting collection of radios, a very enthusiastic host will take you
a interesting tour. Children are allowed to play the miniature trains and
other mechanic toys.

|
Turning to the right at the Brink, near the design-shop, you find
a tavern Herberg-Museum Slaait’nhoes. An old fashioned tavern, full of
curiosities. It has an innkeeper who serves old-fashioned meals, but also
prepares, when ordered, a luxurious dinner-show. Often he is occupied
with making pictures in very fine sand. Intriguing!
